NEBRA will provide an overview of major federal and state actions related to PFAS in biosolids, including EPA’s draft risk assessment, disposal and destruction guidance, updated analytical methods, and legislation. The session will also highlight collaborative efforts such as the Wastewater Residuals BioHub and offer tools to help utilities manage PFAS-related challenges. There will be a discussion of EPA’s January 2025 draft risk assessment which has sparked growing concern among municipal wastewater utilities, especially regarding land application practices. A national study examining long-term biosolids application sites across 17 states and 23 locations to evaluate potential public health exposure will also be covered. Finally, Vermont, with its strong history of biosolids recycling, is now addressing PFAS-related risks to soil, groundwater, and the food chain, and will share findings from its PFAS research and strategies for reducing risks in biosolids management.
